WHY THE NAME

More than a General Store or Tavern. Part of a legacy.

In 1833 the frontier firm of Lincoln & Berry held a license to sell liquor at its New Salem store — a business that supplied a town, fed and lodged travellers, and answered to the state for the privilege of doing so. Abraham Lincoln is believed to be the only US President to ever hold a liquor license in their name. The reputation and anecdotes that created the “Honest Abe” moniker also trace back to the President’s early years as a store clerk and business owner at the Lincoln Berry General Store and Tavern.
